Developed with designers Aishwarya Mahadevan, Sarah Chiesa, and Tristan Kercher
We created a disassembly rating specific to different fastener types. Built into these ratings are the number of units, the time of labor per unit, and a usability factor scaling how valuable an assembly is after disassembly.
Evaluating disassemblability from the very act of labor allows for an informed and precise measurement of any given structure. An entire structure can be quickly assigned a disassembly rating from a total quantity of area applied to different building “architypes” where materials and fasteners are already determined. In order to understand and test this metric, we designed an assembly specifically to the concepts of design-for-disassembly. The assembly uses reversible fasteners, and notably uses fasteners that have high-value post-disassembly usability factors.
The metric was further developed and integrated into the RhinoCircular Grasshopper plugin to aid in evaulations for dissassembly or circularity in new and existing buildings.
