Terra Firma: NewGrounds is an installation done withing the Regenerative Architecture Lab that demonstrates how rammed earth can be produced across the northern US region to help in the decarbonization of the building industry. Nine earthen monoliths, eighteen inches in diameter and eight feet tall, are arranged in a three-by-three matrix.
The three soils selected for the installation have three different geologic makeups and represent the three main soil formations which are prominent throughout NY state and the region. The columns were eventually dismantled through disasembly testing with SBP engineers in order to verify and confirm our engineering design values. The testing confirmed our testing protocals which are defined in our paper.
